Organic Coconut Oil for Hamster’s Bumblefoot
We have three hamsters and one has had bumblefoot. It’s a sore that develops from an injury, usually from running on a wire wheel, which was the case for him. We found that the wheel we got at the local pet shop had several spots where the wire poked out. I never noticed it before we started looking so it’s easy to miss these harmful imperfections. We taped over the wheel edges, and I found a product online called a Wodent Wheel (not a misspelling) which we have asked our local pet shop to stock.
Then I started to care for the wound with organic coconut oil. First we rinsed his foot gently in warm water, dried it and applied an anti-bacterial ointment. the next day I started putting a dab, maybe 1/8 teaspoon, of the organic coconut oil on his foot once per day. It has antibacterial properties and is good for overall health. I can say this with confidence since I take it internally every day myself, and from the improved condition of his bumblefoot and his coat.
Before I began giving it to him, his coat wasn’t smooth and shiny. The hair was thinner and less smooth than it is now. He also had very loose stools for awhile which has cleared up completely.
I can’t say enough good about giving your hamster organic coconut oil for his/her bumblefoot.
You can find it online ( I shop at and recommend Tropical Traditions) at your local health food store, or that section of your grocery store. It might seem expensive, but compaire it to a visit to the vet.
Below are links to some books on Amazon.com on the healing benefits of organic coconut oil.
